A Year in Denmark

What actually happens, month by month.

A short guide to the rhythms, holidays and small cultural moments that shape Danish life.

January

Quiet recovery from jul. Forskudsopgørelse (preliminary tax) opens — check yours.

February

Fastelavn: kids dress up and "beat the cat out of the barrel". Buy fastelavnsboller.

March

Light returns. Skoleindskrivning (school enrolment) deadlines in many municipalities.

April

Påske (Easter) — five-day weekend. Many shops closed Maundy Thursday to Easter Monday.

May

Store Bededag was scrapped in 2024. Konfirmation season — expect family gatherings everywhere.

June

Sankt Hans (23 June): bonfires on the beach and a witch on top. School year ends late June.

July

Denmark goes on holiday. Many small businesses close. Plan ahead.

August

School starts. Skolestart photos on every social feed. Foreninger (clubs) open new seasons.

September

Årsopgørelse adjustments. Autumn term routines settle in.

October

Efterårsferie (week 42) — autumn school break.

November

Mortens aften (10 Nov): roast duck. Daylight shrinks fast — hygge season begins.

December

Jul. Julefrokost season at work, julekalender on TV, candles everywhere. Slow down.
